While there are many, many different styles of Pizza to choose from, one of the most popular is Neapolitan. Use this guide to learn how you can make an authentic Neapolitan Pizza at your home - whether you’re looking to replace your weekly takeout with home-cooked goods or impress at your next dinner party!

How to Make Authentic Neapolitan Pizza

The History of Neapolitan Pizza

While Pizza is enjoyed throughout Italy, much of its heritage can be traced back to Naples, Italy’s third-largest city. The first ever Neapolitan Pizza (sometimes referred to as a Margherita Pizza), was by a baker named Raffaele Esposito, and many reports for him to be the first person to create Pizzas similar to those we know today, that is some kind of dough, with tomato sauce, cheese and toppings.

What ingredients are included in a Neapolitan Pizza?

To create an authentic Neapolitan Pizza, you must source the right ingredients.

  • Pizza dough, made with Italian 00 wheat flour.
  • Fresh tomatoes.
  • Fresh mozzarella cheese.
  • Fresh Basil.
  • Olive Oil.

The ingredients are not the only specifications that must be followed in order for the Pizza to be considered truly authentic, however. It's also required that the Pizza is cooked in a high-temperature stone oven for around 60-90 seconds.

How to make an authentic Neapolitan Pizza.

  1. Create authentic Neapolitan Pizza dough a few days beforehand, allowing for natural fermentation to take place.
  2. Preheat your pizza oven or oven.
  3. Create a sauce for the base of your pizza by combining garlic, fresh tomatoes, oregano, and a little pinch of salt in a blender or food processor.
  4. Slice your mozzarella.
  5. Prepare your pizza dough, creating your ideal size/shape of pizza.
  6. Spread the pizza sauce across the base, before adding the sliced mozzarella.
  7. Cook in the oven until the cheese has melted. Top with basil and drizzle of olive oil.
